Madrone sensitivity to construction damage

Am working on an appraisal of a madrone next to a 6 month old road widening project in Grants Pass, Oregon.
About 15 feet of the root zone just outside the dripline was lost next
to a 33" DBH Madrone. Sudden decline symptoms include twig dieback, loss
of all leaves older than one year of age and new leaves growing to a size of
only 1 1/2 inches long. It doesn't look like the tree will make it.
It seems like you just breath on these puppies and they keel over.
Do you folks know of any documentation showing the ultra-sensitivity to
construction damage of this species ?
Thanks, Mike Oxman
