breathing exhaust fumes

Today I had to make a finish stump cut in very close quarters. The tree was in a corner next to the house next to the ac unit next to the fence. In between holding my breath and cutting the stump I breathed in more fumes than I ever can remember doing before. Does any one have a trick on how not to get so much crap in your lungs? Also a similar circumstance is when a piece of wood is jammed inside the chipper and you gotta crawl in there and cut it out. I had my ground man use the blower to try and keep the fumes away but I still got a lungfull or two. Any suggestions would be helpfull. Thanks!
